Australia's captain Expected to Feature a Key Part in Ashes Series

Pat Cummins bowling

Pat Cummins has secured 309 wickets in 71 five-day games with an impressive average.

Australia's chief selector the selector has stated that pace spearhead Cummins will have a crucial role in this winter's England-Australia contest.

Speculation had been growing that the veteran bowler might be unavailable due to a persistent back stress problem that was still troubling him.

Earlier indications from the squad suggested no official announcement had been made regarding Cummins' participation, with the five-Test series kicking off on November 21 in Western Australia.

He revealed that the captain is progressing and was "optimistic" about the prospects of participating.

"We're aware that time is getting short and various factors at play, not just the physical problem, but additional elements," the selector added.

"We're encouraged. [We are] really confident that he'll participate in a key capacity. Hopefully starting in Perth. Should that not happen, then we'll pick it up."

Past Concerns

Cummins was ruled out the ODI and T20 games against both Asian and Trans-Tasman rivals last month after scans revealed a stress reaction in his back.

There is a track record of recurring issues, with recurrences in several earlier campaigns forcing him out of three Australian summers in a short span.

Cummins stated he would be bold in recovery efforts in his rehabilitation process to ensure his availability for the contest.

He mentioned that there was no confirmation if the captain had resumed bowling as part of his comeback but conceded it was "getting tight" for him to be fit for the initial match.

Contingency Plans

In case of absence, former captain Steve Smith will assume leadership.

Versatile player Green was excluded lately from Australia's squad for their limited-overs matches against the subcontinent side as a precautionary measure because of an abdominal issue.

He labeled it as a "minor" injury and mentioned that he'll feature in the domestic first-class competition, so will be "ideally positioned to resume bowling."

"We put so much time has gone into creating the schedule for him to take part for the initial game as an dual-role player," he elaborated.

"He was only going to play the first two ODIs in any case. His aggressive style the willow in shorter formats, if it causes any delay for a short period, we opted to approach this more conservatively."
