The former Brazilian leader has been arrested after authorities concluded he posed a definite escape threat while under home confinement.
The ex-president was convicted of planning a government overthrow in the ninth month and handed more than 27 years in prison, but he remained under home detention pending appeals.
Top Judicial Official Alexandre de Moraes said the move to detain the septuagenarian politician was a preventative measure after "new facts" came to light.
This encompassed attempting to break his electronic bracelet and a summons to a demonstration that could enable a chance to flee".
Judicial Records Show Escape Concerns
In a paperwork permitting the arrest, Justice Moraes said information from the facility tracking his home detention suggested the one-time head of state's aim to disable the electronic ankle bracelet to secure accomplishment in his flight.
This, it said, would be "facilitated by the chaos caused by the protest called by his son.
His son, Flávio Bolsonaro, who serves as a senator, called for a meeting of his followers near the former president's residence to take place on the weekend.
Flávio Bolsonaro wrote on digital networks on Friday: "Are you going to fight for your country, or observe everything from your phone there on your settee? I urge you to fight with us."
He said the vigil would be so followers could offer prayers for his well-being and for the reestablishment of democratic governance in our land."
Embassy Asylum Concerns
Part of the magistrate's determination was the possibility of the former president's move to diplomatic missions near the home, considering that the inquiries revealed a record of planning to seek refuge through a diplomatic representation", a declaration said.
The legal document underscores that the United States embassy in the capital, the capital city, is positioned around 8 miles from his dwelling.
Worldwide Consequences
Bolsonaro's legal woes have provoked anger from fellow conservative nationalist US President President Trump, leading him to enact a fifty percent tax on Brazilian product imports.
He is being kept in a national police facility in Brasilia and will undergo a custody hearing on the following day.
Recent Legal Requests
It was only on Friday that the his legal team asked the Supreme Court to permit him to serve his whole jail sentence under domestic detention, with digital surveillance.
They also asked that he be allowed to leave his home for medical care, saying he demanded regular treatment for lung conditions and other illnesses.
Context of Sentencing
He was convicted of leading a conspiracy aimed at maintaining his control after he lost the 2022 election to his left-wing rival, Lula.
Top judicial officials said that he knew of a plan which encompassed plans to assassinate the current president and his running partner, Geraldo Alckmin, and to detain and kill the presiding judge - the Supreme Court justice who has been overseeing Bolsonaro's trial.
The scheme was stopped because it failed to get the support of the military leaders. The current president was inaugurated without problem on the first day of 2023.
But a following week, on January 8th, thousands of Bolsonaro supporters stormed and vandalised official structures in the capital, Brazil's capital.
The law enforcement took action and around fifteen hundred individuals were arrested.
The magistrates found that the rioters had been encouraged by him whose scheme, they said, was for the Brazilian military to intervene, restore order and return him to office.
At the moment, his attorneys called the decades-long sentence extremely harsh.
He was also prohibited from campaigning for office until 2060 - eight years after the conclusion of his imprisonment.
The ex-leader called the court case a targeted investigation" and said it was designed to prevent him running in the next presidential race.
