PSG Defeats Marseille on Penalties to Claim French Season-Opening Trophy in Kuwait.

PSG players celebrating

The Parisian club has now claimed the prestigious trophy on fourteen different occasions.

The Parisian giants required a stoppage-time equaliser followed by a successful penalty shootout to get past their arch-rivals in Kuwait and capture a record-extending fourth consecutive Trophee des Champions title.

The European champions seemed to be coasting towards a comfortable win in the match featuring the Ligue 1 winners and the Coupe de France winners after the French winger found the net in the opening stages.

Yet, Marseille fired two times in the closing moments to take a shock lead. First, the English forward converted from the spot-kick, before Willian Pacho unfortunately turned the ball into his own net for an own-goal.

In a remarkable twist of events, Goncalo Ramos snatched a crucial equaliser in the final seconds to send the match into a deciding shootout. The Parisian shot-stopper Lucas Chevalier then emerged as the key figure, saving crucial kicks from Matt O'Riley and Traore.

From the spot, Ramos, Vitinha, the full-back, and Desire Doue all converted successfully for PSG to seal a convincing shootout win.

The record champions Paris Saint-Germain, who met last season's Ligue 1 second-placed team Marseille after completing a domestic double, have now lifted this trophy for the twelfth time in the past 13 years.
